Strawberry Almond Oat Smoothie

Despite all our efforts to vary our morning eating routine, these Grab-and-Go Oatmeal Cups are our go-to breakfast most days of the week!

But even creatures of habit need a change every now and then so we started working on a slight variation of our favorite foods and created this Strawberry Oat Smoothie. It has made a strong showing as of late, and we couldn’t be happier about it.

How Do I Substitute Dried Herbs for Fresh?

Welcome to a new series we're calling Ask the Team! You ask us questions and we answer. Today Summer Miller answers a reader's question about subbing dried herbs for fresh.

If you can’t get to the store right now to buy fresh herbs, don’t fear!

With much of the country still embraced by cold weather and a whole lotta social distancing going on now is the perfect time to get acquainted with dried herbs.

Dried herbs can be more potent than fresh herbs, so when subbing one for the other we follow a simple rule of thumb…

One Simply Terrific Thing: Oven Mitts That Actually Work!

One Simply Terrific Thing: Oven Mitts That Actually Work!

One Simply Terrific Thing: Oven Mitts That Actually Work!

I have used my share of oven mitts and pot holders.

Quilted squares, silicone sleeves, suede mitts – one by one, they’ve all made their way to the bottom of a drawer somewhere, or thrown out altogether. Some were too unwieldy, or fell apart in the wash, or (the biggest offense!) didn’t work at keeping heat away from my hands, even for the short amount of time it takes to pull a baking dish out of the oven and set it on the stovetop.

No more – not since I purchased these!

I’ve had a pair of these silicone quilted oven mitts from Homwe ($14) for 2.5 years, and they are, quite simply, the best. I can grip pans comfortably and securely, and they really work at keeping heat out, up to 450°F – and I have definitely tested it to that temperature, even higher! I especially love that the mitts extend halfway up my arm for even more protection from bumps and burns. (There’s an extra long version, too!)

The textured silicone part of the glove is waterproof, which means you can easily rinse off a spill or spatter instead of leaving the food to set a stain, or having to wash the mitts right away. But of course you can do that, too, since the mitts are machine-washable. (And they come out looking great!)

Truly, the oven mitts of my dreams.

Cheers to good tools!

NEW RECIPES! Instant Pot Chicken Tortilla Soup, Cheesy Potato Casserole, and MORE!

Latest recipes from Simply Recipes.

Hi, everyone!

Greetings from Week 2 (or is it 3?) of not leaving the house. Thankfully my stores of everything except onions are holding strong. I had no idea I cooked with so many onions!

One thing I've been thinking about a lot (other than a lack of onions in my life) is how we can still have celebrations during this time of sheltering in place. We have Easter coming up, and graduations after that. I know of a lot of friends with birthdays in the near future — including my own at the end of the month! Dialing back our expectations for these gatherings is a must, but how do we still make them special?

Here are a few ideas I've heard:

  • For Easter, what about organizing a neighborhood Easter egg hunt where everyone "hides" a picture of an Easter egg in their front windows for kids to hunt for as they go on walks?
  • Decide on an Easter menu with your family, and then cook it together virtually via Skype or Zoom
  • For her birthday, a friend's daughter baked cupcakes and then left one on each of her friends' doorsteps while they waved to each other through the window. So sweet!
  • Another friend is planning to spend her 40th birthday hosting a series of Zoom calls with friends from high school, then college, then grad school, all spaced throughout the day.

Please let me know any ideas you have for how to make celebrations feel special in the coming weeks. Cook well! Be well!
